Thanks for continuing to post these wonderful videos! A few months ago, I watched one of them with an Amishman from nearby Middlefield, Ohio. He really got a kick out of it.

When Channel 48 signed on the air in Philadelphia in 1965, there was a local kiddie show called Dickory Doc and one of the funniest puppets on the show was named Professor Schnitzel. Creator Anthony "Chic" Laganella obviously was inspired by the Ted Rickenbach character. I listened to a couple of the recordings and enjoyed them very much. Thank you for the information on Professor Schnitzel and the Pennsylvania Dutch.

THANK YOU!! my grandpa used to hold a coin to my injury and say the heili heili hinkeldreck while wiggling his hand about like it was magic. as best as he could remember he translated it to “get well get well chicken sh*t. today it’s here tomorrow it’s gone” he’s no longer with us and finding other people’s memories that correlate to mine is very fulfilling.

Does anyone know a word that sounds like “schlerichy”? (Shlair-ih-key) I have this deep rooted memory of my grandmother saying something like this to refer to when a person starts to get a little too out of control/excited, and as a result the thing we were doing comes out sloppy or messy. She’d say “don’t get all schlerichy!” But I can’t find any word like that online!

I don't know why... but this video reminded me of a prank I pulled as a kid. I took a hard boiled egg to the bus stop and while waiting for the bus chased a kid around threatening to smash the egg on his head. When I did and everyone seen it was hard boiled... no harm, no foul... everyone laughed. I asked the kid if he wanted to try it on "Booger" (the neighborhood tough guy... not a bully... just mean), who always showed up at the last second to catch the bus. He was excited and everyone else watched in anticipation as I hand him a RAW egg and he walks over to this guy 3 times his size and confidently smashes this raw egg on his head. I don't know who had the more shocked look on their face... Booger, the kid, or everyone else that was watching. Surely a day I'll never forget and I'm sure Bruce and Booger feel the same.

No disclaimer needed! If you ask a PA Dutchman, he will give you common sense advice. But, I have heard the saying, I don’t know if this is a Dutch saying, “Common sense doesn’t grow in everyone’s garden.” And sometimes you can sit back and watch someone being dumb, then give advice! I just recently started driving an "Amish Taxi" and I'm diving headfirst into your videos.... you are a Godsend. Do you have any advice for an outsider when it comes to making small talk. Are there subjects that are relatable to *most* PA Dutch (I've found baseball is quite popular) and more importantly, are there subjects you avoid at all costs? I was raised that you don't discuss religion or politics in mixed company... are there other subjects that would fall into that category that wouldn't be apparent to an English?

Will we have "Nix besser!" and "vahuddelt" in a future video, too, Herr Professa? 😁

I’m from Pfalz and this is 95% our dialect. Like you could probably go down to the grocery store and chat with anyone. They’d understand you with little to no effort.

I was at an Amish restaurant and gift shop in Sarasota…I was outside and two Amish ladies stopped on their bicycles next to where I was sitting, and be an to conversation in PA Dutch. I speak fluent High German and so I walked up to them and greeted them in German, and told them I could understand their conversation perfectly. They both looked like they were about to faint. LOL

I don't know the expression "Duh dei Schdiwwel on" (excuse my spelling). I know the expression in Hochdeutsch: "Zieh dich warm an" wich means that a Situation is coming that's supposed to be hard to handle. In my dialect we have "Schaffschuhversteckler/sch" (lit. s.o. who hides his / her working shoes). That means so is very lazy.

I‘m so slow today. It literally took me more than a minute to realize that the reference term here is ‚the boot‘ and not ‚das Boot‘ 😅

Er veröffentlichte den Namen Necrobia 1796, markierte ihn durch einen Stern als neue Gattung und ordnete diese hinter der Gattung Clerus ein.[6] Sein Freund und Gönner Olivier übernahm den Namen unter Erwähnung Latreilles als Urheber jedoch bereits 1795 und stellte Necrobia zusammen mit Clerus unter die Nummer 76.[7][8][9] Der Namensteil „Schinkenkäfer“ (engl. hambeetle) ist dadurch zu erklären, dass die Art hauptsächlich in Nordamerika in großem Umfang an Schweineschinken schädlich wurde. Der Name Koprakäfer ist auf sein massiven Auftreten in wärmeren Klimaten am Kernfleisch von Kokosnüssen zurückzuführen. Der Namensteil „Kolbenbuntkäfer“ ist durch seine kolbenförmigen Fühler und seine Zugehörigkeit zu den Buntkäfern erklärbar.
